Happy adoption day to our favorite kitty, Bones!
We adopted Bones from the Denton Animal Shelter on 3.23.23 and have fallen absolutely in love with him over this past year.
I often told people that I would never have a cat. Although I had cats growing up, I had become such a dog person, practically swearing off cats all together in my adult life.
It had been almost a year since we had to unexpectedly lay our beloved companion, Pilgrim, to rest and we were beginning to open our hearts to the idea of another animal friend. We would go to the shelter to see the dogs, but they would all remind us too much of sweet Pilg. They could never be as good a boy as he was, we would say. They couldn’t compare to that desert mutt we adopted as a young pup in Utah and traveled all over the country with.
We quickly realized our hearts weren’t ready to receive another dog, we needed more time.
It was Alex who initially suggested a cat. He had never had one growing up and had always wanted a solid black one. He would browse the available cats online and I would noncommittally watch over his shoulder, judging them and finding a way to dismiss each one. Until one day, a shift occurred and I opened to the idea. I woke up one day and I was ready.
We checked the shelter’s website and there he was. A solid black kitten, three months old, and available for viewing in two days. We thought about it. We considered all the factors of having a cat and heavily considered how much we loved our leather couch.. how while Pilgrim was always good about staying off it, a cat might not give the same respect to our boundaries.
But still, we made our way to the shelter two days later, arriving exactly as the doors opened for fear that someone else might get him first. We were led into the viewing room where we were able to play with him, or more accurately, where we got to watch him explore and give him brief pets as he wandered by. We both thought he was kind of goofy looking. A little too long for his slim frame. Ears a little too big for his face and a tail that seemed to go on forever. He was a weird little boy but we instantly loved him.
We looked at each other with that knowing look, the kind that says, are we really doing this? Each understanding the other’s answer of yes.
Journal entry from the day after we adopted him:
We adopted a cat. He doesn't have a name yet.
We got him home and he meowed all day. The little guy doesn’t pronounce the “m” in meow, so it’s more of a “oww” sound.. a little yelp that reverberates around the room and deep in your eardrums.
We slept all together in bed, him between us. I was too scared to roll over that I slept on my side all night. He is so small and all bones, but he’s quick enough to be missed and spry enough to jump onto the counters and kitchen table.
He woke us up early the day after we brought him home. He is hyper like a kitten is and ready to be up and fed by 5:20am. He ate some breakfast and fell back asleep in Alex’s arms. Such a cute little napper.
Fast forward one year and we truly couldn’t imagine life without him. He brings us so much joy the way he chirps at the birds outside, meows with excitement when we open the bedroom door in the morning, and holds his tail in a full curly-q just like his brother Pilgrim did.
Not only has he grown into the most beautiful cat, he’s also friendly and curious; not afraid to meet new people or explore the great outdoors on his leash. He gets compliments by everyone who interacts with him, and even at the vet he’s a calm and patient boy.
We are so blessed by this little void of a kitty. He has helped heal my heart and reminds me everyday of the importance of the here and now.
He lives his perfect little cat life and I couldn’t be more grateful for him deciding to join our family when he did.

We tried a kitten when I was little. Within the first hour my eyes were bloodshot and swollen. That was it for gatos. All of my siblings either have or have had dogs in adulthood. Bones is very cute. I have a Jack Russell , Yuma, and she often lays like a Sphinx. When she was younger, she’s 16, I called her my stealth puppy. One second she wasn’t there, I’d turn around and there she was. Maybe I got a two for one….cat and dog mix? 😂😂
As well as each of you write, I really think you’ve missed your callings! ❤️ Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Thanks.
